Ras Al Khaimah is the Emirate people skip, which is exactly why it is worth the day. The road up Jebel Jais climbs into the Hajar mountains and the temperature drops noticeably as you go — a genuine relief in summer. Al Jazeera Al Hamra is the stranger stop: a pearling village abandoned in the 1960s and left standing, coral-block houses and all. Dhayah Fort sits above the date plantations with the best view in the northern Emirates. Very few tour buses on any of it.
